The Mandalorian the third season begins airing on Disney+ on March 1, after being out for more than two years.
Of course, we got these bonus episodes in the middle of last year. The Book of Boba Fett, but it’s been a while since we’ve spent some quality time with everyone’s favorite space daddy.
But with The Mandalorian With season three promising bigger stakes and more epic than the show’s previous week’s monster stories, fans may be curious to know if the heart of the show will remain the same.
Discover, digital spy sat with Pedro Pascal, the internet boyfriend, to talk about Din and Grogu.
So we’ve been waiting a while for season three and fans are excited…
I know…well you have Boba Fett book – Stop complaining! (laughter)
And you? Are you still excited to put on the armor every time?
Yes. There’s always that initial moment of feeling like the biggest badass in the world, and then the aches and pains start to set in.
And has your approach to playing Din (aka Mando) changed over the years?
A lot has changed over the years, including the execution of the show, which is amazing.
The way John Favreau and Dave Filoni started Season 1, got into all the surprises of Season 2, tied Season 2 and 3 with the Boba Fett bookand continued to expand around the world.
And in a way, they improvised their approach each time. I remember checking in with them and just asking, “Are you guys okay?” because season 3 is so epic, you have to wonder how they’re supercharged.
Without spoiling too much, where do we stand thematically in Season 3? What is the scope we are dealing with?
So there are more Mandalorians (laughs).
We saw.
I think that’s a beautiful aspect (of Season 3) in terms of expanding the lore around Mandalore and including more characters and expanding the coolness – because Mandalorians are so cool.
The Creed and the culture around it have so many interesting facets that relate to society for us, and getting more into the flesh of that, under the armor, is fascinating.
And when I said ‘epic’ before, I didn’t mean it in a typical way. Star Wars fashion. I mean, related to what Season 3 does visually and narratively, it’s pretty epic.
Over the course of the show, you can follow the tension between Din’s understanding of his heritage, being a foundling, and the found family aspect of what he and Grogu are building. Is that something that is explored in season three?
It’s such a beautiful dynamic that exists between Din and Grogu; protector, protected. And how that dynamic can be reversed, and that there are so many layers to their relationship.
So I would just say that what is initially, or instantly, rich in its dynamic becomes more available to us in season three. What disarms us in this relationship continues to grow and that’s fun.
Can you talk a little more specifically about how this dynamic with Grogu, post-Boba Fett bookit’s changing?
In terms of what was instantly identifiable within the relationship. Not limited to that kind of immediate charm, if that makes sense?
The show introduced something we fell in love with so quickly, but there’s so much more to do and explore.
Different levels of that relationship, that bond, getting stronger and there’s conflict — and you know a shift in power dynamics, not power over each other, but who needs what from each other and in what instance.
Which is like every parenting relationship, right?
No, this is the first time this has happened, what we’re doing is inventing fatherhood. (laughter)
The other core relationship that people are curious about is Din and Bo Katan. Can you tease anything about where they find themselves after the aftermath of the Dark Saber stuff?
I mean, there wasn’t necessarily a fallout – sort of an accident.
You got it.
Din took it and is desperate to get it back to her. But it has to be earned in a very specific way. I think what I’m most excited about as far as Season 3 is concerned is what we see Katee do.
as a fan of The Clone Wars, to see this character realized and to see Katee brought back is so exciting.
Totally. Chief Bo Katan.
Finally, were there any (no names) guest stars or moments in Season 3 that you’re excited for fans to see?
The answer is yes, period (laughs).
Well, we’re excited.
You should be.
The Mandalorian season 3 premieres on Disney+ on March 1, and seasons 1-2 are available now on the platform.
