Manchester United and Chelsea ‘could play non-league WREXHAM in US pre-season friendlies’

Manchester United and Chelsea ‘could play WREXHAM non-league in pre-season friendlies in America this summer’ as Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney aim high

Wrexham’s time in the limelight is unlikely to end anytime soon, with Chelsea and Manchester United ‘lined up’ as friendly opponents in the United States.

According to The Telegraph, the non-league club could take on the Blues and Red Devils as part of a pre-season tour in the backyard of its famous owners.

The report details that the two Premier League giants have received ‘offers’ against the Welsh club.

Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have been at the helm of the club for two years and almost continued their FA Cup fairy tale until defeat to Sheffield United in the fourth round replay.

Wrexham are currently second in the National League, five points behind leaders Notts County, with two games in hand.

The champions and winners of the play-off final are promoted to Liga 2 at the end of the season.

Reynolds and McElhenney have been named in the club’s starting squad for a seven-man tournament taking place this summer in the United States.

Wrexham have signed up to play in The Soccer Tournament, a winner-take-all tournament in Cary, NC from June 1-4, with 32 teams competing for a prize pool of US$1 million.

The Dragons confirmed their participation earlier this month, joining a field that already includes Team Dempsey, former Fulham and Tottenham midfielder Clint Dempsey, Hashtag United, Liga MX club Nexaca and US Women, made up of former United States internationals.

The ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ fly-on-the-wall documentary on FX has given the club a global profile, and joining TST is seen as an opportunity to continue this.

TST comes from TNT Enterprises and follows in the footsteps of its big brother, The Basketball Tournament, which was founded in 2014 and also offers a $1 million prize pool.

Inspired by the ‘Elam Ending’ used in TBT, where the clock is turned off in the fourth quarter and a target score must be met to win, a similar rule will come into effect in North Carolina.

Each match will end with ‘target scoring time’, where the winning team’s total at the end of regulation plus one will have to be reached (for either team) to end the match.

TST also announced Conrad & Beasley United – featuring former USMNT stars Jimmy Conrad and DaMarcus Beasley – as one of this summer’s teams, as well as Nati SC, a team of former FC Cincinnati players.

Should Wrexham win the grand prize, the club has committed to spending half of the money on community projects.
